About your Chinese traditional medicine treatment

acupuncture treatment Once in a while we are asked, "Will it work better if I believe in Acupuncture?"

You do not need to "believe in" acupuncture for it to work. Western research has proved that the needles work whether or not the patient believes they will.

Wear comfortable clothes for your visit. We usually put you in a lying position either facing up or down for your acupuncture treatment.

Please arrive 10-15 minutes early for your first visit. There are medical history forms to fill out prior to your appointment.

The practitioner will ask questions regarding your medical history, current complaints and overall health status which relate to your health issues.

Then your pulse will be taken and your tongue will be inspected for the shape, colour and coating. All the information acquired from the consultation enables the practitioner to make the proper diagnosis and plan a suitable course of treatment. This will take 15-30 minutes.

If you're receiving your first treatment after the consultation, your total appointment will last about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour and a half. Subsequent visits will vary between 50 and 60 minutes.

The number of treatments necessary depends upon the nature, depth and seriousness of the disorder. It also depends on your response to the treatment and how well you follow the practitioner's recommendations.

Medical plan coverage

As of April 1, 2008, acupuncture is covered under BC's Medical Services Plan supplementary health care benefits. As well, many insurance companies cover acupuncture treatments. Please check with your own health plan for more information.
